bio
I am Chris Brown-Emanuelli a transgender woman living Rock Hill South Carolina for the last 4 years and I make functional ceramic work. Presently I am in college studying at Winthrop University, and I’m about to graduate with my Bachelor's in Fine Arts concentrating on ceramics work. At Winthrop University I studied under Jim Connell, and, for a short time, Deighton Abrams. I use a range of techniques varying from throwing, hand-building, slip casting, to screen printing, but each piece usually incorporates one or multiple of these techniques into it.
Everything I make and my style of work revolves around the idea that, if I was looking at this work, would I like to buy it. I would like to try to bring nerd culture and fine art ceramics together using my work. The imagery that I used in my work could be defined as nerdy chic, I put together images from role playing games, video games, and steampunk culture on a vessel that is presented in a fine arts studio environment. Nerd culture is not the only thing I tried to present in my work. How I attempt do this is make a vessel put a surface design on that vessel either via screen printing transfer using underglaze and slip, or a simple carving technique on the surface of the vessels and then taking that vessel and placing it on a pillow like object, or pedestal. I also attempt to make work that has an oceanic atmosphere or nautically inspired motifs. This can range from a picture that looks like a pelican, bowls that look as though they have seafoam in them, or on them, and wave-like vessels. The primary goal of my work is to place something in a position that shows the beauty of everyday household items by placing them in a gallery environment.
